Jez Alborough (1959~)

Jez Alborough 는 1959년 탬즈강 위쪽 킹스톤에서 태어났습니다. 그는 Norwich College of Art에서 그래픽 디자인을 공부하였고, 2년 동안 책을 출간하기 위해 노력했다고 합니다. 1984년 그의 첫 출간 작품인 "Bare Bear"는 the Mother Goose Award에서 입선을 하게 되고, 그 후 그는 주로 아이들을 위한 책의 글을 쓰고 그림을 그리게 됩니다. 글쓰기와 그림 그리는 것을 좋아하던 제즈 앨보로는 다른 이의 일러스트만 해오다가 자신의 소원이었던 동화작가의 길로 접어든 뒤, 지금까지 16년 동안 왕성한 활동을 하고 있습니다.

그의 대표작인 Where's my teddy? 를 비롯, 30여편에 해당하는 책을 펴냈습니다. Jez Alborough는 그림 그리고 글 쓰는 일 뿐만 아니라 재즈 음악, 블루스 음악 등을 연주하거나 녹음하는 것도 좋아한다고 합니다.

"어떤 작가들은 자신의 아이들을 대상으로 동화책을 만들기도 합니다. 하지만 저는 아직 아이가 없어서 그렇게 할 수가 없죠. 대신에 어린시절 추억을 되살려 동화책을 씁니다."

그의 말처럼 그의 책들에는 어린시절 추억들을 생생하게 기억하게 합니다. 그의 리듬감 있는 글은 아이들에게 자연스럽게 Read Aloud (소리 내어 읽기)하여 즐길 수 있게 하고 그의 대담하고 다채로운 그림 스타일은 무척 재미있고 자꾸 보고싶을 만큼 매력적이어서 아이들에게 대단한 인기를 얻고 있습니다.

 

Things you didn't know about Jez Alborough

l  With his brother, Jez wrote an episode of the TV comedy series Murder Most Horrid, starring Dawn French, and made a very brief appearance in the final scene.

l  His favourite books as a child were A. A. Milne's Now We Are Six (especially the poem "Wheezles and Sneezles") and Bennet Cerf's Book of Riddles.

l  He is a qualified practitioner of Shiatsu – a Japanese form of massage.

l  He first saw his name in print on a runner-up certificate for a Ready Brek art competition.

l  He once had a job drawing people's portraits at a Butlin's holiday camp. 

l  His favourite film is Whistle Down the Wind.

l  He loves to cook with vegetables that he has grown himself.

l  He took part in a sponsored Hugathon (inspired by his book Hug) with 480 pupils at Thomas's Preparatory School in London that set a new world record for the most people hugging in one place at the same time.

l  His favourite food is his wife's home-made focaccia bread with melted goat's cheese and grilled tomatoes.

l  He loves playing the guitar and writing and recording his own music – and recently composed a theme tune for Duck in the Truck.
