1949년 미국 매사추세츠에서 태어났다. 세계적으로 널리 알려 진 그림책 작가로 세계 여러 나라를 여행하며 취재한 그 나라의 전통 문화를 그림책 에 고스란히 담아내고 있다. 주요 작품으로는 <데이지가 돌아오다>, <노아의 방주>, <모자>, <크리스마스 이브에 누가 문을 두드리지?>, <시골 쥐와 서울 쥐>등이 있다.
