Anthony Browne은 어린 시절 아버지와 함께 그림 그리기를 하면서 몇 시간이라도 보낼 정도로 그림을 좋아했으며 이에 못지 않게 럭비, 축구, 크리켓 같은 운동도 아주 잘했다고 합니다. Leeds대학에서 그래픽디자인을 공부한 처음 몇 년간은 의학서적에 들어갈 인체를 그리는 일을 하였으나 싫증을 느끼고 크리스마스 카드나 연하장을 디자인하는 일을 하게 되었는데 결국 이것이 인연이 되어 그림책을 그리게 되었다고 합니다.

그의 대표작인 Gorilla는 생일 카드에 집어넣은 삽화가 발전된 것이라고 합니다. 독특하고 뛰어난 작품으로 세계적으로 높은 평가와 주목을 받고 있는 작가로 군더더기 하나 없는 완벽한 구성, 간결하면서도 유머가 넘치는 글, 꼼꼼하게 화면을 들여다보게 만드는 그림 속의 정물들, 기발한 상상력으로 세상의 권위와 편견을 신랄하게 풍자하는 내용의 책을 만들고 있습니다. 어려서 "킹콩"을 아주 감명 깊게 본 그는 그의 작품에 고릴라나 침팬지를 자주 등장시키기로 유명합니다.

1983년『Gorilla』로 Kate Greenaway Medal과 Kurt Maschler Medal을 받았고, 1992년『Zoo』으로 두 번째 Kate Greenaway Medal을 받으면서 독창적인 그림책 작가로 알려지게 되었습니다. 그는 독특한 화풍으로 일탈, 고통, 반성, 용서, 재생 등의 진지한 주제를 유머러스하고 재미있게 표현한다는 평을 얻고 있습니다. 2000년에는 세계의 가장 뛰어난 그림책 작가에게 주는 Hans Christian Anderson Medal을 받았습니다. 그는 어렸을 때 보았던 영화「킹콩」에서 깊은 충격과 영감을 받은 뒤, 고릴라는 그의 그림책에 자주 등장하는 단골 메뉴가 되었습니다. 1994년에는「킹콩」이라는 제목의 그림책을 만들기도 했습니다. 대표 작품으로『Willy's Picture』『Willy the Dreamer』『Willy the Wizard』『Willy the Champ』등의 윌리 시리즈와『The Tunnel』『Piggybook』『I Like Books』『Voices in the Park』『Bear goes to Town』등이 있습니다.　

Things you didn't know about Anthony Browne

  1. When he was a boy he wanted to be a journalist, a cartoonist, or a boxer.
  2. He was once asked to present a programme on children's books, in a cage with some gorillas - but one gorilla bit him badly on the leg. It didn't put him off them, but, he says "you wouldn't catch me going into a cage with one again!"
  3. He grew up in a pub and when he was little, would go into the bar, stand on a table and tell stories about a character he'd made up called Big Dum Tackle.
  4. He wore short trousers until he was fifteen.
  5. He thinks the character, Willy, is based on his own childhood.
  6. When he was a boy, he wanted a real trumpet for his birthday, but he got a toy plastic one instead. He says his book, Gorilla, was partly based on that experience.
  7. He loves rugby and played as a scrum-half for eighteen years.
  8. His book The Tunnel was inspired by a very frightening tunnel he and his brother used to go down when they were boys.
  9. When he was a medical artist, he would often eat his lunch in the mortuary.
  10. He says he has never found the perfect pair of swimming shorts!
