William Steig (1907-2003)
이후 각종 신문 및 잡지에 1,600개 이상의 카툰을 그려 일명 '카툰의 왕'으로 불렸고, 1940년대에는 조각에도 관심을 기울여 개인전을 열기도 하였는데, 당시의 조각 작품들이 미국의 여러 미술관에 전시되어 있다.
그러나 그를 더욱 세계적인 인물로 만든 것은 만화·삽화가 아니라 어린이책이다. 1968년 61세에 친구의 권유로 어린이책의 그림과 글을 쓰기 시작한 것이 계기가 되어 어린이책 작가의 길로 들어섰다. 이듬해 자신의 두 번째 그림책인 《당나귀 실베스터와 요술 조약돌 Sylvester And The Magic Pebble》로 어린이책 최고의 상인 칼데콧상(賞)을 받으면서 본격적인 그림책 작업을 시작하였다
이후 《아모스와 보리스 Amos & Boris》(1971), 《멋진 뼈다귀 The Amazing Bone》(1976:뉴베리상 수상), 《아벨의 섬 Abel's Island》(1976), 《치과의사 드소토 선생님 Doctor De Soto》(1982), 《용감한 아이린 Brave Irene》(1986), 《부루퉁한 스핑키 Spinky Sulks》(1988), 《아빠와 함께 피자 놀이를 Pete's a Pizza》(1998) 등 30여 편의 어린이책을 출간하였다.
2000년 미국의 드림웍스가 제작한 애니메이션 영화 《슈렉 Shrek》의 원작 동화 작가이기도 하며, 작품 대부분이 어린이와 귀여운 동물들의 순진무구한 시선을 통해 자연에 대한 사랑, 가족과 이웃의 소중함을 그리고 있다.
